Buying a Carpet is certainly not an easy process. It requires a lot of knowledge and expertise. It’s certainly not like buying vegetables from a grocery store. There are a lot of factors to consider prior to making that big purchase. For instance, one has to take into account colors, size, placement of carpets, budget, design, material, traffic area etc. to name a few. Here, we have listed some of the main points to take into account before buying a fine quality rug or carpet for your home.
1)Material
There are so many types of materials to choose from, when it comes to a good quality handmade carpet. One can either pick from a high quality New Zealand wool which is highly durable or if one wants a little more luxurious look, one can go ahead with a pure silk carpet. However, in silk carpets also, there are two types of qualities, silk on silk and silk on cotton. It’s only a matter of preference, what one chooses. Lastly, other materials include cotton, natural fibers like jute, sisal etc.
2) Size
The most important step before anything else is to measure the space where one wants to place. For example, for a living room or dining room one would require a large area rug. If one needs a carpet for a bedroom or any other space like lobby, sitting area etc. a medium size rug is good enough. However, a bed-side carpet would be smaller in size. Other suitable areas to place a good quality handmade carpet would be entrance, kitchen, outdoor patio etc. Lastly, one can either opt to place a carpet with the legs of the furniture on the carpet or off the carpet. Again, its only a matter of preference.
3) Design
Design is also one of the most crucial factors to take into consideration, while deciding a good quality handmade carpet. For instance, one can either pick a modern design carpet or go for good old traditional carpet. A traditional carpet is usually made in wool or silk and has intricate design pattern since such pieces are inspired by Persian patters. On the other hand, modern design carpets are suitable for contemporary homes. One can also customize their design and get a rug made as per their own patterns.
4) Traffic Area
A lot of people might not understand this, but picking the type of carpet really depends on the usage and traffic area. For example, if its a high traffic area, a wool carpet is most suitable. Since such carpets are highly durable and no matter how one uses the carpet, chances are it wont get ruined. On the other hand, a silk carpet is usually preferred for a low traffic area and if a space is formal. It is due to the fact since, silk carpets are expensive and can get easily ruined if used roughly.
5) Budget
Lastly, as mentioned before, buying a carpet is certainly not buying cheap stuff, especially when one goes for a good quality handmade area rug. If one is looking for a medium range rug, go for a wool carpet. If one can afford to buy expensive rugs, go for a pure silk or Persian carpet.
Hence, to conclude it would be apt to say that although there are a variety of factors that one must take into account whilst decorating or re-designing their space, one must actually love what rug they end up buying. Since the fact of the matter is that a carpet is something that one doesn’t buy every day or every few months. Because a good quality carpet is highly durable and can also be passed on from generations to generations altogether, one must absolutely love the carpet they end up buying. Imagine waking up to a carpet for years that you don’t even appreciate or could be an eye sore. Therefore, follow the aforementioned tips before buying a good quality handmade carpet or rug.
